Teaching Students to Create Scientific Diagrams
Do your students know how to create diagrams in science? Can they observe without opinions? Can they make qualitative and quantitative observations? Do they know how to label? Learning to create a diagram is EASY with these free lessons that walk your students in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades through creating a scientific diagram.
FIRST, learn all about the difference between quantitative and qualitative observations. (Quantitative observations use measurements and numbers, while qualitative observations rely on the 5 senses). There’s a printable poster for reference and an engaging activity where students will observe common classroom objects.
NEXT, move on to creating a diagram. Using the simple ‘What Does a Diagram Need’ checklist, students will correct a mislabeled diagram and move on to creating their own properly-labeled scientific diagram! They’ll learn where to put the title, how to align to sketch, where labels should go, and the importance of straight lines.
